FAQ

  • It depends on your plan, but more often than not, yes. Betterish Nutrition is currently in-network with Aetna and Anthem Blue Cross and United Healthcare, which means many clients pay little to nothing out of pocket for 1:1 nutrition counseling.

Most major insurance plans also cover nutrition counseling with a Registered Dietitian when there's a qualifying diagnosis like prediabetes, Type 2 diabetes, Chronic Kidney Disease, or obesity.

The best way to know for sure is to call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask: "Do I have benefits for Medical Nutrition Therapy or nutrition counseling with a Registered Dietitian?"

Not covered through Betterish directly? You may still be able to see Jen through Nourish, where most major insurance plans are accepted at little to no cost. HSA and FSA cards are also welcome for all out-of-pocket services.

No insurance or out-of-network? See below for private-pay pricing.

  • Individual sessions range from $145 to $215, though many clients pay significantly less, or nothing at all, depending on insurance. HSA and FSA cards are accepted for all out-of-pocket costs.

Have insurance? Many clients pay $0. See above for coverage details.

    • Call your insurance company prior to your appointment to verify your coverage. You can find this number on the back of your insurance card.

    • Ask the insurance company to verify your coverage for nutrition services. If the insurance company asks for a CPT code (a procedure code), provide them with the following codes 97802 & 97803.

    • If they say you do not have coverage using those codes, NEXT ask them to check your coverage for the following CPT codes: 99401, 99402, 99403 and 99404. We also can bill for S9470 if it is covered on your policy.

    • When talking with the insurance representative, ask what diagnosis codes (ICD 10 codes) are covered?

    • Ask if insurance coverage provides preventative or only medical benefits. This can determine if you have a copay or share of cost.

    • Ask if ICD 10 code: Z71.3 is covered.  If you have the diagnosis of overweight, obesity, pre-diabetes, diabetes (specify type), hypertension, or high cholesterol, IBS, etc. you may want to see what your coverage is for these diagnoses as well.

    • If you have any questions after verifying your benefits, we are happy to help. Please email jen@betterishnutrition.com or call 916-244-5226

  • No referral is needed to book an appointment at Betterish Nutrition. However, if you plan to use insurance, having a qualifying diagnosis (such as prediabetes, Type 2 diabetes, or obesity) documented by your doctor will help ensure your visits are covered. When in doubt, call the member services number on your insurance card and ask about your Medical Nutrition Therapy benefits before your first appointment.

I don’t give advice from a pedestal. I walk beside you.

  • A CDCES is a healthcare provider with specialized training in diabetes management, blood sugar education, CGM interpretation, and behavior change. Unlike a general dietitian or your primary care provider, a CDCES focuses specifically on helping you understand why your numbers do what they do, and what to actually do about it. Jen holds both her RD and CDCES credentials, with 15+ years of clinical experience in diabetes and prediabetes care.
